Light Weight New England Rifle Kit
The design of this rifle kit is a light weight version
of my regular N.E. RIFLE KIT.
The difference being a light weight barrel. The barrel that I use is the same
barrel that I use in my SWIVEL BREECH RIFLE KIT. The barrel is 54 cal. rifled or 28 gauge smooth, straight tapered from
.850 at the breech to .750 at the muzzle, 32 inches long. This smaller barrel reduces the weight of the finished
rifle to just under six lbs. The barrel is fitted with a false breech that the barrel just hooks into which is the
way the originals were made. This makes it easy for removal of the barrel for cleaning .
I also reduced the size of the lock, using the L.R. Maslin instead of the Durrs Egg. The Maslin lock has
been referred to as a small Durrs Egg and I feel that this lock matches up to the smaller barrel better and in my estimation
is the fastest and most reliable of all the locks that L&R Lock Co. makes.
This kit comes complete with everything
that is needed to finish the rifle except for the small piece of cow horn that is needed for the nose cap. A very solid
black cow horn or a horn with a black tip is the only other thing that you need to purchase.
The wood is available
in either cherry or walnut, which is what the originals were made from. Everything is pre- cut
to within 99% of the finished rifle, including the but plate, trigger plate, lock, mortise and false breech.
